NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has made history by achieving the closest approach to the sun, confirming a significant milestone on Friday. Earlier this week, the spacecraft navigated within an unprecedented 3.8 million miles (6 million kilometers) of the sun, enduring extreme conditions.

The probe, which launched in 2018, successfully passed through the sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona. On Thursday night, NASA received confirmation that Parker survived the intense journey, paving the way for continued research and observation.

At its closest approach, the Parker Solar Probe reached an astonishing speed of 430,000 mph (690,000 kph). Equipped with a specialized heat shield, it can withstand scorching temperatures that reach up to 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,370 degrees Celsius).

Research teams are eager to analyze data from this mission. Understanding the sun’s outer atmosphere—which is hundreds of times hotter than its surface—and the mechanics behind the solar wind are key objectives of this ambitious project.
