Nabhan’s Bold New Book Unveils the ‘Creative Disruptions’ of Borderlands Migrants Against the American Grain
TUCSON, AZ – Ethnobotanist Gary Paul Nabhan, a recipient of the 2024 James Beard Award, will host a book signing event this Saturday at Petroglyphs. He will present his upcoming work, “Against the American Grain: A Borderlands History of Resistance,” which is set to officially release next week.
Nabhan describes this book as a departure from his previous writings. “This one is really about how immigrants and Indigenous people from the Borderlands have generated innovations and resistance,” he explained, highlighting over 400 years of cultural evolution in America.
The book provides an in-depth examination of how Borderlands communities have influenced U.S. culture. Nabhan’s title refers to William Carlos Williams’ 1925 collection, “In the American Grain,” which primarily focused on Anglo perspectives of American history. The contrast in perspective is clear; Nabhan aims to celebrate the contributions of marginalized groups rather than villainize them.
The signing event at Petroglyphs, located at 160 S. Avenida del Convento Ste. #156, will take place from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Attendees can engage with Nabhan in a relaxed atmosphere, posing questions and obtaining book signings in an informal setting.
