My Journey and Insights from Serving in the U.S. House of Representatives
By U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko |
As my tenure in the U.S. Congress nears its conclusion, I reflect with gratitude on my journey representing Arizona’s 8th Congressional District during a pivotal time for our nation. This experience has been both transformative and humbling.
My path has not always been smooth. Over thirty years ago, I found myself as a single mother, having escaped an abusive marriage. I faced challenges, including financial instability and uncertain housing. Never could I have imagined then that I would rise to serve as a Congress member, advocating for thousands in the Capitol.
With resilience, I remarried and welcomed two more children into my life, now proudly sharing my joy with six grandchildren. Family is my cornerstone.
My foray into public service began with volunteering at my children’s school. There, I understood the critical role of parents in shaping education policies. Though I initially lost a school board election, the experience propelled me to continue striving for positive change. Too much was at stake for my family and the community to back down.
Two years later, I successfully ran for the Arizona State Legislature. My nine years there, both in the House and Senate, were fulfilling. I achieved the role of Senate President Pro-Tempore, following in the footsteps of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and focused on crucial issues, including school choice, economic growth, and border security.
Unexpected events often redefine our paths. In December 2017, following my congressman’s resignation, I felt compelled to run for higher office. After much consideration and family discussions, I triumphed over eleven competitors in the primary election, ultimately serving over six years in Congress. My story exemplifies the American dream’s possibilities.
Each day in Congress has been a privilege. Approaching the Capitol, I reflect on the remarkable figures who shaped our laws and policies. This role demands dedication and respect for those I represent.
Throughout my tenure, I advocated vigorously for my constituents, participating in committees such as Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Energy and Commerce. I am proud to have numerous bills signed into law and have made impactful contributions to key legislative efforts.
My commitment to advocating for consumer-oriented energy policies has been particularly rewarding. Representing the freedom and prosperity of countless Americans in the Energy and Commerce Committee aligns with my dedication to our nation’s foundational principles.
I strive to embody the vision of representation our founders envisioned. Listening to my constituents has always been paramount. I engage with businesses, respond to correspondence, and communicate openly about my policy positions. My approach is grounded in honor and respect for my district’s values.
The memories of my time in the People’s House will stay with me forever. I am sincerely thankful for the support I have received and will carry the pride of representing Arizona’s 8th Congressional District throughout my life. May our great nation continue to be blessed.
