Musk’s Cost-Cutting Crew Targets Auto Safety Agency with Job Cuts

Elon Musk has publicly criticized the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), claiming that the agency’s investigations and recalls are hindering advancements in self-driving technology. This statement comes as Musk’s team has reportedly initiated job cuts at NHTSA, which plays a crucial role in overseeing safety regulations for Tesla vehicles.
According to NHTSA, the job reductions were modest and have occurred through a combination of layoffs, buyouts, and firings. A statement from the agency emphasized that despite the cuts, they continued to prioritize their responsibilities. “Even with these modest efficiencies, NHTSA is still considerably larger today than it was four years ago,” they noted.
Musk’s actions coincide with ongoing investigations into fatal incidents involving Tesla vehicles. While NHTSA has maintained that it will enforce laws affecting all vehicle manufacturers, questions remain regarding the potential impact of these staffing changes on ongoing probes.
In addition to overseeing safety, NHTSA has required automakers using self-driving technology, including Tesla, to report crash data—a directive that has drawn criticism from the company and raised concerns among watchdog groups about its future viability.
The job cuts, part of a broader initiative led by Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, appear to align with a push for reduced federal spending. Nonetheless, NHTSA reassured the public that it retains essential roles aimed at preventing traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
