Museum hosts annual market

Native American artists, like Michael Kanteena, a Laguna potter, have consistently displayed their cultural artistry at the annual Indian Market event. This year’s market is scheduled for December 14-15 (submitted photo).

The 47th Annual S’edav Va’aki Museum Indian Market will unfold on Saturday, December 14, and Sunday, December 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4619 E. Washington St. in Phoenix. This vibrant event will feature over 100 Native American artists showcasing fine art, crafts, and cultural items, while attendees savor stage performances, participate in cultural demonstrations, and enjoy diverse food offerings.

Main stage entertainment promises an engaging experience with hoop dancing, Native American flute performances, a Tohono O’odham Waila Band, traditional dance, and solo guitar. The cultural demonstrators in the Ki:him area will provide hands-on learning opportunities ranging from hoop dancing and beading to gourd art and basket making—activities ideal for all ages.

Martha Ludlow-Martinez, a renowned singer and storyteller from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, will serve as the emcee for the main stage. Guests can also indulge in popular Native American cuisine, including fry bread, Navajo tacos, and various vegan options, presented by local vendors.

Event admission includes access to the museum, allowing visitors to delve into the rich history of the O’Odham ancestors who once flourished at this archaeological site. Notably, the va’aki—a large adobe structure—is the only remaining one still standing, under the management of City of Phoenix Arts and Culture. This year, attendees can explore the newly renovated Community and Connections galleries, featuring original artwork and stories from contemporary O’Odham artists. Additionally, the exhibit “Following Their Roots” will highlight Indigenous agricultural practices across Arizona.

Every item sold at the Indian Market adheres to the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990, ensuring authenticity and handmade quality.

Admission prices are set at $10 for guests aged 13 and older; $5 for Tribal Members, active and retired military personnel, and police and fire personnel. Children aged 12 and under, as well as members of the S’edav Va’aki Museum Foundation, are admitted free.
