Maricopa Unified School District board members approved significant updates to their sex offender registration policies during a meeting on September 11, 2024. The revisions were passed unanimously, marking a proactive step in safeguarding students.
Assistant Superintendent Tracey Pastor presented the updates, which were necessary to align district policies with recent changes in state legislation. The adjustments impact Policy 3-401, addressing how the district manages notifications regarding registered sex offenders, particularly those with legal custody of children.
Pastor highlighted that amendments to Title 13 of the criminal code require registered sex offenders to inform local law enforcement about changes in a child’s enrollment status. “This is crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of students,” she remarked.
The updates stem from Arizona legislation passed earlier this year, notably HB 2174, signed into law by Governor Katie Hobbs on March 29. This legislation permits school districts to request a standing order for glucagon, a medication for reversing severe hypoglycemia, enabling schools to maintain it on-site for emergency situations.
In addition to this, Governor Hobbs signed SB 1404 the same day, compelling sex offenders to notify the county sheriff regarding their child’s enrollment status within 72 hours, thereby enhancing the monitoring necessary for public safety.
