Mom’s Arrest: A Mother’s Day Hug with Unexpected Consequences

A Maricopa woman was arrested after allegedly assaulting her daughter-in-law during a heated Mother’s Day exchange that began with a hug and holiday greetings.
Albertina Cuevas, 63, was taken into custody on May 10, 2025, at a mobile home on McDavid Road, located north of Maricopa Meadows. Police charged her with assault and disorderly conduct, both related to domestic violence.
Officers responded to a disturbance call shortly before 4 p.m. They spoke with Cuevas’s daughter-in-law, the homeowner, who reported that the altercation escalated after she wished Cuevas a happy Mother’s Day and offered a hug.
Cuevas allegedly reacted by yelling and scratching the victim’s face. The daughter-in-law also reported that Cuevas threw a plate and a water bottle at her during the argument.
A second witness, the victim’s son and Cuevas’s grandson, informed police he overheard the dispute from his bedroom. When he checked on his mother, he reported seeing Cuevas throw a metal towel rod at her.
Cuevas was transported to the Pinal County jail, facing a potential one-year sentence. Her arraignment is scheduled for June 2 in Maricopa Municipal Court.
