Mixed Doubles Gold Medalists Shroud Romance in Mystery Amid Growing Speculation
Social media has been abuzz with speculation about the romantic status of the new tennis champions, who have left fans guessing.
PARIS, France — Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac celebrated their victory in the 2024 Olympics mixed doubles by sharing a hug and a kiss after winning the gold medal for the Czech Republic on Friday night. They humorously dubbed their relationship status as “top secret.”
Siniakova and Machac triumphed over China’s Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 in a tense match tiebreaker. The Olympics format uses a first-to-10, win-by-two rule instead of a traditional third set.
When a reporter inquired about their relationship during the post-match news conference, Machac rolled his eyes. “Are you still together?” was the question on everyone’s mind.
“That’s our personal life, so you don’t need to know that,” Siniakova responded with a laugh. She added that they enjoy keeping people guessing.
Machac added humorously, “This is top secret.”
Siniakova now holds both of her country’s Summer Games tennis titles. She previously won the women’s doubles gold with Barbora Krejcikova at the Tokyo Games.
Specializing in doubles, Siniakova has claimed nine Grand Slam titles. The first seven were with Krejcikova. This year, Siniakova has won titles with Coco Gauff at the French Open and with Taylor Townsend at Wimbledon.
“I showed myself that I can play well with anyone,” Siniakova said. “I should be more proud of myself.”
The mixed doubles bronze went to Gabriela Dabrowski and Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, who defeated Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands, 6-3, 7-6 (2).
Machac’s best men’s doubles results came with Zhang as his partner this year. They reached the Australian Open semifinals and the French Open quarterfinals.
“Friendship’s totally broken,” Zhang joked, referring to Machac’s victory. “He destroyed my Olympic Games.”
Despite their defeat, Wang and Zhang leave Paris with a silver medal. Meanwhile, China’s Zheng Qinwen will compete in the women’s singles gold medal match against Croatia’s Donna Vekic.
“Chinese tennis is getting better,” Zhang commented.
Offering insight into Siniakova’s advice before the final, Machac humorously claimed she told him: “Ace on the line and winner on the line.”
Siniakova clarified her stance: “With a team, you are two, so it’s really helpful when you communicate and you help each other.”
Wise words for both doubles partners and perhaps for off-court relationships as well.
