Missouri man holds up Maricopa librarian with ‘finger guns,’ gets jailed

Kile Nickelson, a 39-year-old man, was arrested by Maricopa police on February 14, 2025, after allegedly threatening library staff with “finger guns.” According to a probable cause statement, officers responded to the Maricopa Library & Cultural Center following a report of his behavior.

The incident began when library manager Angela Howell informed Nickelson that the establishment was closing. In response, he allegedly aimed finger guns at her from his waist, prompting Howell to attempt to escort him out.

After being asked to leave, Nickelson lingered outside near employees’ vehicles. When Howell instructed him to vacate the premises, he charged at her while claiming she had called the police. Fearing for her safety, Howell locked herself inside the library.

Upon arrival, officers found Nickelson on the side of the building, exhibiting signs of intoxication, including a strong smell of alcohol and slurred speech. When police attempted to arrest him, he reportedly became combative and resisted their efforts, requiring officers to subdue him.

Identification was established using a Missouri birth certificate found in his backpack, revealing that Nickelson had active warrants in that state. Public records reviewed later suggested that he is a resident of Cuba, Missouri.

Nickelson claimed to officers that he had consumed too much alcohol and resisted because he dislikes being touched. He was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct, criminal nuisance, and a municipal violation for public drunkenness. If convicted, Nickelson faces up to seven months in jail and a potential fine of $2,500.
