Migrants Navigate Journey North from Panama’s Darién Gap: On Foot or by Bus?

Migrants headed north from Panama's Darién Gap can walk or catch a bus

The governments of Costa Rica and Panama have introduced a new initiative aimed at facilitating the transport of migrants from the Darién region in southern Panama to Costa Rica’s border with Nicaragua. This plan is designed to address the increasing number of individuals seeking safer routes and opportunities.

However, the implementation of this program has highlighted significant economic challenges. Many migrants find the $30 bus fare to be an insurmountable barrier. As a result, some individuals remain stranded in precarious conditions, unable to afford the journey despite the new option.

This situation raises critical questions about the accessibility of support for vulnerable populations. Both governments are now faced with the task of reassessing their strategies to ensure that financial limitations do not hinder the movement of those seeking refuge or better prospects.
