MHS Club’s Award-Winning Anti-Drug T-Shirts Make Splashes at Maricopa Hospital

Maricopa High School sophomore Angel Villaruel was recognized today for her contribution to the design of a T-shirt promoting the Be Awesome Youth Coalition’s Red Ribbon Week. The event occurred at Exceptional Community Hospital in Maricopa on October 23, 2024, underscoring the partnership between the hospital and the coalition.
During the kickoff, which focused on drug and alcohol prevention among youth, Villaruel expressed her pride in receiving the recognition award. This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme emphasizes the message: “Be BOLD, don’t let drugs take hold.”
Be Awesome Director Priscilla Behnke, present at the event, stated, “We’re excited about getting a chance to promote the message.” The organization is dedicated to empowering young individuals to make healthy choices through education and community involvement.
Villaruel, a DECA member since her freshman year, was joined by her sister Loren, also a DECA member. Loren recently spoke at the Maricopa Unified School District Partners Luncheon, highlighting the family’s commitment to community service.
Annie Giagni, Chief Nursing Officer at Exceptional Community Hospital, praised the collaborative efforts of Be Awesome and the MHS DECA club in promoting drug prevention. “It’s inspiring to see our youth take a stand against drugs with such creativity and passion,” Giagni remarked.
The kickoff event not only celebrated Villaruel’s achievement but also gathered support from staff, students, and community leaders, all rallying behind the theme of fostering a drug-free environment. Giagni reiterated the hospital’s commitment, stating, “Exceptional Hospital is dedicated to supporting efforts that encourage a healthier, drug-free community.”
