Mexico Tightens Immigration Rules: American Tourists Now Must Show Documents

PHOENIX — U.S. citizens planning to travel to Mexico this spring break must be aware of important immigration requirements. Mexican authorities now require that travelers complete a specific immigration form prior to their arrival.
The Consulado de México en Phoenix advises that all U.S. citizens present a valid passport when entering Mexico. Additionally, travelers must “register your entry into Mexico” by filling out an electronic form available on their website.
This permit is valid for 180 days and must be accompanied by a current U.S. passport. To complete the form, travelers need to provide various details, including:
- Entry information: Point of entry, date of arrival, and departure
- Personal information: Name, last name, gender, date of birth, nationality, and country of birth
- ID information: Type of ID, ID number, issuance date, and expiration date
- Residence: Country and address
- Trip information: Reason for travel and address in Mexico
- Email: A valid email address
Once all information is entered, users can generate their document, which must be printed and presented to immigration officials upon arrival in Mexico. Although this process is not new, enforcement has increased, aiming to ensure compliance with immigration regulations and enhance safety.
Notably, Mexican nationals holding a U.S. residence card or individuals with dual citizenship are exempt from this requirement. Travelers are encouraged to plan accordingly to avoid delays at the border.
