TUCSON — Tucson Border Patrol Specialty Units and lawmakers from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) have apprehended an illegal immigrant wanted by the Mexican government for weapons trafficking. The suspect was captured in Phoenix, marking a significant enforcement action against cross-border criminal activities.

Chief Patrol Agent Sean McGoffin announced the arrest, emphasizing the collaboration between federal and local agencies. “The arm of the law caught up to a Mexican arms smuggler,” he stated on social media, confirming the suspect’s removal to Mexican authorities.

The suspect, residing illegally in the U.S., will now face legal consequences in Mexico. Images from the arrest showcased the Mexican Federales alongside HSI agents, highlighting the cooperative efforts in tackling transnational crime.

On Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) held a press conference in Tucson, underscoring recent achievements in interdicting illegal firearms. Director of Field Operations for Tucson, Guadalupe Ramirez, noted that the Department of Homeland Security, in partnership with various law enforcement agencies, has successfully halted instances of child abduction, criminal pursuits, and arms smuggling.

Ramirez stated, “Our successful interdiction and seizures play a critical role in protecting America’s borders.” He reinforced CBP’s authority to inspect vehicles and individuals departing the U.S. to uphold legal compliance.

He further emphasized an ongoing commitment to combat weapons trafficking, particularly aimed at thwarting terrorist activities. “This is not just a border violation; it is a direct act supporting terrorism that threatens national security,” he concluded.

Special Agent Brendan Iber from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) addressed the prevalence of large-caliber firearms favored by cartels, such as the Barrett M82 and Ohio Ordinance series. He revealed an alarming statistic: since January 20, the ATF has prevented nearly 11,000 firearms from reaching dangerous criminals in Arizona alone.
