Metropolitain Sun of Arizona NCNW Installs New Executive Board

On September 7, 2024, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) witnessed a significant leadership transition as Toni Buggs passed the gavel to Dr. Gwendolyn Murrell. The ceremony celebrated the new presidency of the Metropolitan Sun of AZ NCNW, marking a commitment to the organization’s enduring legacy.

Founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, NCNW is dedicated to advocating for and empowering women of African descent, alongside their families and communities. Recognized as an “organization of organizations,” NCNW comprises 330 campus and community-based sections and 33 national women’s organizations, collectively supporting over 2,000,000 individuals.

Dr. Bethune’s legacy as an educator and activist endures within the organization’s mission and outreach initiatives. Under past leadership, including that of the renowned Dr. Dorothy Height, NCNW has consistently focused on educational advancement, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. The organization is also committed to promoting health awareness and facilitating access to healthcare, all while encouraging civic engagement and social justice advocacy.

Expressing enthusiasm about her new role, Dr. Murrell emphasized her commitment to continuing the work alongside National President and CEO Shavon Arlene-Bradley, MPH, MDiv. During her closing remarks, Dr. Murrell quoted Howard Thurman, inspiring attendees by stating, “A dream is the bearer of new possibilities, of enlarged horizons, and of great hope. However, to achieve anything, it takes ACTION. Together, WE CAN DO THIS!”

The Metropolitan Sun of AZ NCNW invites community members to participate in their monthly meetings, held on the first Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. at the Pyle Adult Recreational Center in Tempe, AZ. Membership is encouraged to advance Dr. Bethune’s mission in advocating for women of African descent and their broader communities.

Dr. Murrell’s Executive Board includes Alissia Young (First Vice President), Sheri Dozer (Second Vice President), Jasmon Cornick (Third Vice President), Valerie Smith (Recording/Correspondence Secretary), Marsheree Barrett (Treasurer), Cathy Kennard (Financial Secretary), Deidre Banks (Parliamentarian), Penita Pratcher (Chaplain), and Rosie Coyle (Historian).
