State Senator J.D. Mesnard is set to defend his seat in Arizona’s Legislative District 13 this November. Representing Chandler, Gilbert, and Sun Lakes, Mesnard has been a fixture in Arizona’s politics since joining the House of Representatives in 2011 and later moving to the state Senate in 2018 after reaching his term limit in the House.

Beyond his legislative duties, Mesnard is passionately involved in humanitarian work. He co-founded Voices of the World, a non-profit that provides aid to impoverished areas globally, particularly focusing on healthcare in Mozambique. The organization established Casa Ahava in Maputo, a 19-bed facility offering care to cancer patients, which underscores Mesnard’s dedication to global health issues.

Mesnard’s legislative efforts are deeply rooted in compassion. He champions bills addressing domestic violence, child abuse, and the welfare of veterans, seniors, and mistreated animals. Notable among his legislative successes is HB 2001, passed in 2016, targeting the non-consensual distribution of explicit images, known as “revenge porn.” The law received overwhelming bipartisan support in both state chambers. Mesnard emphasized the importance of this bill, highlighting the severe personal and professional impacts on victims.

Another significant piece of legislation is HB 2302, enacted in 2011, which created an Address Confidentiality Program for victims of domestic violence, sexual offenses, and stalking. This measure also passed with strong bipartisan backing.

The upcoming election in District 13 is projected to be competitive, as the district has narrowly swung between Republican and Democratic victories in recent elections. Mesnard’s opponent is Democrat Sharon Winters, promising a closely-watched race this November.
