Journal contained entries about torturing, killing animals. Mesa police have arrested journal's owner.

MESA, Ariz. — Mesa police have made an arrest in a disturbing case of animal cruelty involving a journal that records horrific acts against dogs. The alleged perpetrator, 42-year-old Brook Scalero, was taken into custody on November 18.

According to police reports, Scalero’s former roommate discovered the journal detailing the torture and deaths of several dogs, including two named Pepe and Griffin. Entries describe heinous acts such as choking the animals and leaving them in a hot car for extended periods. One entry specifically mentioned the death of a dog named Gus while in Scalero’s care.

After leaving the roommate’s home, Scalero reportedly admitted that the journal was hers and acknowledged her involvement in the alleged acts. Police were led to the remains of Pepe, found near a bush on November 15, while Griffin’s remains were located at a local animal hospital last month.

The investigation has raised significant concerns about animal safety in the community. Scalero now faces charges of animal cruelty and theft, following the revelation of her alleged actions and the contents of the journal.

In a broader context, the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, often referred to as “The Valley,” comprises various cities like Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert. This region has experienced significant population growth, housing around 4.8 million residents as of the 2020 Census.

Maricopa County, where Mesa is located, is notable for being the fourth-largest county in the U.S. by population and encompasses an impressive 9,224 square miles. The area is rich in parks and natural resources, providing ample outdoor opportunities for residents.

As local authorities continue to address the emerging concerns regarding animal welfare, community members remain vigilant, fostering a safer environment for pets and ensuring incidents of cruelty are taken seriously.
