Mesa family says their son was assaulted so severely he was hospitalized. Police say without video of the fight, they can't make an arrest

Mesa Police says there is no probable cause in the case.

MESA, Ariz. — A 14-year-old Mesa boy endured his entire summer break with a severe arm injury.

An x-ray dated May 25, 2024, reveals the extent of the damage: both bones in his left arm were split in half.

“Every week we were getting x-rays to make sure it was healing okay,” said Brittany Warrick, the boy’s mother. “He has three incisions where they inserted two wires to help his bones straighten out because his arm healed warped, like crooked.”

Warrick shared that her son sustained a broken arm, a concussion, and several cuts following an alleged attack by another teenager at a park in Mesa.

“I turned around, and I saw his whole face and he’s holding his arm and there’s blood all over his shirt and chest,” recounted Warrick.

A video posted on Snapchat after the incident showed the teen sitting on the ground, holding his arm, while another boy could be heard laughing in the background.

“The fact that they would post online immediately after and laugh about it, and get likes on social media is, it’s insane for me to think they would do that,” said Jeffrey Warrick, the teen’s step-father.

The teen’s family reported the incident to the police.

Mesa Police informed 12News that the investigating officer closed the case. “Due to no video footage of the actual fight and differing stories made by each involved party, probable cause has not been established in this case.”

The parents of the injured teen are urging police to reconsider. They’re concerned that without consequences, these incidents will continue.

“They’re getting away with it. There’s no accountability,” Warrick stated.

A Mesa Police spokesperson indicated that a detective would review the investigating officer’s initial findings.
