Meet the Maricopan Trailblazer Making Waves in the Midwest!

Joseph Merchant, a native of Maricopa, has achieved recognition for his academic performance as a freshman at Rockford University, located near Chicago, Illinois. Merchant was recently named to the fall 2024 dean’s list, demonstrating his commitment as both a student and a member of the university’s Lions football team.
Merchant is not your typical Maricopan. He was born in the city before relocating to Illinois, where he now balances his studies and athletics. A 2023 graduate of Desert Vista High School in Tempe, he has local roots, having attended Legacy Traditional School and Santa Rosa Elementary School.
During an interview over his Christmas break, he shared insights about Maricopa’s evolution since his family moved to The Lakes at Rancho El Dorado more than 20 years ago. “Seeing the city grow was a cool thing,” Merchant remarked, noting the transformation from a small town to a bustling community.
Merchant expressed his enthusiasm for the newly opened Home Depot near The Wells, a new addition to the area since his last visit. “It’s great to see more people moving in, meeting new neighbors and making friends,” he noted, highlighting the vibrant changes in his hometown.
Adjusting to life in Rockford has been a challenge, primarily due to the weather. “It’s cold,” he said with a chuckle. Experiencing snow for the first time has been a significant shift for the Maricopa native. “Getting used to snowfall and below-freezing temperatures is a whole different look for me,” he explained, appreciating the stark change from his warm origins.
Despite the demands of being a student-athlete, Merchant prioritizes his academic goals. He dedicates three hours each day to weightlifting and team practices while majoring in mechanical engineering. His ultimate dream is to own a mechanic shop, driven by his passion for working on cars. “It brings out a joy for me,” he stated.
Merchant emphasizes the importance of managing his time effectively. “I schedule my college life around my classes,” he shared. He also advised fellow students to make time for themselves amidst the rigors of academics and sports. “It takes a toll on your studies and your social life,” he cautioned.
Rockford University, established in 1847, is known for its diverse undergraduate and graduate programs across various disciplines, including liberal arts and professional fields. Merchant’s journey exemplifies the pursuit of excellence in both athletics and academics, making him a notable figure in the Maricopa community.
