Meet Jonathan Owens: The Man Beside Simone Biles
The gymnastics star’s husband is expected to cheer her on in Paris for the final round.
WASHINGTON — Simone Biles is set to compete in her third Olympics nearly three years after her high-profile withdrawal from the Tokyo Games to prioritize mental health.
With the twisties and Tokyo behind her, Biles leads Team USA’s women’s gymnastics roster, including fellow stars Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and newcomer Hezly Rivera.
At 27, Biles became the oldest American woman to qualify for an Olympic gymnastics team since the 1950s, securing her spot with a standout performance at the Olympic trials last month.
During her two-year hiatus post-Tokyo, Biles underwent many changes. Last year, she marked a triumphant return by clinching her sixth world title. Throughout, she has maintained her focus on mental health, continuing regular therapy sessions even during competitions.
Beyond gymnastics, Biles married Jonathan Owens, an athlete currently playing safety for the Chicago Bears, in April 2023. The pair met on the dating app Raya in March 2020.
Following their courthouse wedding in Houston, the couple celebrated a second ceremony in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Owens expressed his love on Instagram, calling Biles “My person, forever.”
The Chicago Bears are allowing Owens to miss five days of training camp in order to travel to Paris to support his wife. He shared photos on his Instagram story, cheering for Biles from the U.S. before his expected departure overseas.
The couple is also building a house in the Houston suburbs, expected to be completed after the Paris Games.
Support between the two athletes is mutual. Biles was a regular presence at the Green Bay Packers’ stadium during the 2024 NFL season, cheering on Owens as his team pursued a Super Bowl bid.
