Havasu PD welcomes new recruit to city’s K9 unit

The Lake Havasu City Police Department has strengthened its force with a new, four-legged recruit capable of sniffing out trouble. “Echo,” a determined 2-year-old German Shepherd, has been added to the department’s K9 unit, following a rigorous four-week training program where he earned certification in detecting illegal drugs, including fentanyl.

Echo is the latest addition to the city’s K9 unit, joining “Rocky,” a Springer Spaniel brought on board in 2020. This expansion has been made possible thanks to the generous donations from the local community, which have significantly bolstered the police department’s capabilities in combating drug-related crimes. Lake Havasu City Police Chief Troy Sterling expressed his appreciation, noting that these contributions were crucial in integrating Echo into the team.

Chief Sterling emphasized that Echo will play an essential role in the department’s ongoing efforts to curb the presence of illegal narcotics within the community. This initiative comes after the K9 unit was originally disbanded in 2012 due to budget constraints, highlighting the community’s support in restoring this valuable resource.

Those wishing to contribute to the K9 program can send donations to LHCPD K-9 Program at 2360 N. McCulloch Blvd, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86403. Echo’s arrival marks a pivotal moment in the department’s mission to enhance public safety and drug enforcement.
