McMillan’s Record-Breaking Performance Propels Wildcats Past Lobos, 61-39

Arizona clinched a decisive 61-39 victory against New Mexico, highlighted by an extraordinary performance from Tetairoa McMillan. The sophomore wide receiver etched his name in the record books by accumulating 304 receiving yards across 10 receptions, soaring past the previous single-game record of 283 yards set in 1996.
Moreover, McMillan equaled the school’s record for touchdown receptions in a single game by scoring three times, further contributing to the Wildcats’ overwhelming offensive display.
Quarterback Noah Fifita also shone in the season opener at Arizona Stadium, throwing for 422 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Quali Conley complemented the offense with 90 rushing yards and three touchdowns, showcasing a well-rounded attack.
New Mexico’s Devon Dampier had a commendable performance, accounting for five touchdowns, yet Arizona’s offensive prowess proved insurmountable. By accumulating a staggering 627 total yards, the Wildcats pulled ahead in the second half after a tightly contested first half that ended with Arizona leading 27-24.
“I like the way we rallied in the second half and thought we played good team football,” commented new head coach Brent Brennan. “That’s the rhythm that we need, complementing each other as we play.”
The victory marks a notable moment for Arizona, who appeared in the AP preseason poll for the first time since 2015, signaling a resurgence in the program’s fortunes.
New Mexico, now 0-2 under first-year coach Bronco Mendenhall, struggled defensively for the second consecutive week. Despite the efforts from Dampier, the Lobos fell short in matching Arizona’s relentless offensive onslaught.
