McKasson Unveils Landmark Background Checks at Pima County Fairgrounds Gun Show

Molly McKasson, founder of Citizens for a Safer Pima County and former Tucson City Council member, joins Mike Humphrey, a member of the Pima County Board of Health, in discussing recent changes to gun control regulations. A critical measure that has garnered overwhelming support from the American public is the implementation of universal background checks, aimed at closing the loophole that allowed private sellers to bypass this essential procedure.

Thanks to the Bi-Partisan Safer Communities Act passed in 2022, a significant shift has occurred. Now, “private sellers” are required to obtain a federal firearms license, conducting background checks if they engage in selling firearms. This regulation aims to restrict access to firearms for prohibited individuals, including felons and those with domestic abuse or mental health issues. The result is anticipated to be a safer environment for all, a sentiment echoed by most Americans.

It took over a year for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to formalize this regulation, known as ATF Rule 2022-R17. A revision of the definition of a “private seller” followed public comment, clarifying that it encompasses anyone profiting from gun sales. The regulation officially took effect in April 2023.

Questions remain about the implementation of this crucial safety measure in Pima County. The Pima County Board of Supervisors endorsed the new definition, and County Administrator Jan Lesher has been proactive, urging the Southwestern Fair Commission to ensure compliance during gun shows at fairgrounds.

Additionally, Sheriff Nanos has expressed support for the new rules, with deputies present at all fairgrounds gun shows to monitor compliance and prevent unauthorized sales. Gun show promoters have also documented measures taken to adhere to the new regulation.

However, the effectiveness of enforcement is still uncertain. With a gun show scheduled for March 1-2 at the Pima County Fairgrounds, stakeholders are calling for a walkthrough of the event. This would serve as an opportunity to assess how the public safety rules are being applied in practice.

The hope is for comprehensive adherence to the new regulations at all gun shows, swap meets, and online sales in Pima County. Residents are encouraged to voice their support for universal background checks, reinforcing the importance of this common-sense approach to public safety.
