Max Majerle & Wes Ball dominate as Pima wins by 94 points over Ascending Prep

The Pima Community College men’s basketball team kicked off their 2024-25 regular season on Saturday with an impressive performance against Ascending Prep at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium, securing a resounding 154-60 victory.

After allowing the Saints to score first, Pima quickly took control of the game with a remarkable 17-0 scoring run, leading to an overwhelming 80 points in the first half, compared to Ascending Prep’s 28. The second half mirrored the dominance of the first, as the Aztecs opened with a 17-4 run and outscored their opponents 74-32.

Sophomore Max Majerle led the charge, delivering a standout performance with 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point territory. His stat line also boasted a double-double, comprising 10 rebounds alongside five assists and three steals. Fellow sophomore Wes Ball was equally impactful, amassing 25 points and grabbing 19 rebounds, seven of which were offensive. He maintained a perfect streak from the free-throw line, going 6-for-6.

Freshman Isaac Johnson made significant contributions off the bench, scoring 20 points with a stellar 10-of-12 shooting showing. He also collected seven rebounds and recorded three steals. Another notable performance came from sophomore Cohenj Gonzales, who nearly achieved a triple-double with 18 points, nine assists, and nine steals. Freshman Kaelum Brown finished with 16 points on an impressive 8-of-9 shooting, while sophomore Cooper Jones added 15 points, shooting 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. Freshman Khalon Johnson rounded out the contributions with 12 points, six assists, and five rebounds.

Sophomore Kota Benson, playing a significant role, dished out 15 assists along with scoring six points and making two steals. The Aztecs will play again at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium next Saturday, November 9, facing Arizona Christian University JV, with the game set to begin at 2 p.m.
