Massive Turnout for 5th Annual 'Skatin' for Leighton' at Salt River Fields

PHOENIX — Hundreds gathered at Salt River Fields on Sunday for the 5th annual Skatin’ for Leighton event, a tribute to Leighton Accardo, who passed away at the age of nine following a battle with cancer. The event not only honors her legacy but also supports girls’ hockey in Arizona.
Participants skated along the concourse or walked the field to remember the young hockey player, who was a part of the Arizona Kachinas, the state’s only all-girls hockey program. Leighton’s story became widely known after her courageous fight against stage four cancer ended in November 2020.
Her inspirational journey caught the attention of the Arizona Coyotes. In 2019, during ‘Hockey Fights Cancer’ month, they signed her to a one-day contract, allowing her to take part in practice and attend a game against the Calgary Flames, where she participated in the honorary puck drop. The Coyotes acknowledged her impact by naming her the first star of the night.
In 2021, the Coyotes honored Leighton further by inducting her into their ring of honor, marking a historic moment as she was the first non-player, coach, or broadcaster to receive this recognition in NHL history.
Since its inception, Skatin’ for Leighton has raised nearly $260,000, with over $56,000 allocated to assist 27 families in need last year. The community continues to rally around this cause, ensuring Leighton’s legacy lives on.
