PHOENIX — Malik Aziz has resigned from his position as chief of the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland, marking a significant development in the search for Phoenix’s next police chief. He was one of three finalists for the role.

On Wednesday, Maryland officials announced the appointment of a new chief during a press conference. County Executive Aisha Braveboy praised Aziz, wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Aziz has led the Prince George’s County department for the past four years. His departure has sparked discussion about the ongoing hiring process in Phoenix.

Currently, a spokesperson for the City of Phoenix confirmed that no hiring decision has been made to date. The selection process is anticipated to continue into July.

Recently, Aziz participated in a public forum, alongside the other finalists, showcasing their visions for the Phoenix Police Department.
