Deleted Mark Kelly social media post raises speculation about his prospects to be Kamala Harris's running mate

Sen. Mark Kelly deleted a post on X after users questioned his standing as a top contender to be Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.

PHOENIX — Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to choose a running mate for the 2024 Presidential Election before Tuesday, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly is reportedly on the short-list.

A short-lived post from Kelly’s personal X account Sunday afternoon left people questioning if that is still the case.

“My background is a bit different than most politicians. I spent my life serving in the Navy and at NASA, where the mission always comes first. Now, my mission is serving Arizonans,” Kelly said in an X post that’s since been deleted.

The post was deleted in less than an hour.

Kelly posted another message a short while later.

“Whether it was from my time in the Navy and at NASA, serving in the United States Senate, or visiting our troops overseas: I’ve learned that when your country asks you to serve, you always answer the call,” Kelly said in an X post.

Users and news outlets speculated the post was hinting about Kelly’s standing in the running to be Harris’s pick to be on her ticket.

Multiple political consultants told 12News these posts didn’t reveal Harris’s pick and leave nothing to be read into.

A Kelly spokesperson had a similar message.

“An Arizona senator tweeting about being an Arizona senator is not news. Go back to your Sundays everybody,” Jacob Peters said in an X post.

Harris reportedly interviewed the top contenders this weekend and is expected to make a decision within the next 36 hours.

Harris and her running mate will then be on a cross-country tour, including a campaign event in Phoenix on Friday evening.
