Tempe is gearing up for the inaugural U.S. Martial Arts Film Festival, set to run from May 1 to 4. Co-organizer John Donohue aims to attract both martial arts fans and film enthusiasts with a captivating mix of modern action films, kung-fu classics, and live demonstrations.

Donohue joined forces with organizer Leo Ramos, who faced challenges in launching the festival previously. “When he was ready to try again, I jumped in to help,” Donohue said, reflecting on their collaborative approach.

A key highlight includes a rare screening of “Enter the Dragon,” the legendary Bruce Lee film, authorized by the Bruce Lee Foundation. This marks a notable event, as the film has seen minimal theatrical display since its 1973 debut.

In addition, festival-goers can expect fresh independent projects from industry veteran Danny Lopez, alongside nostalgic favorites from the 1970s and ’80s. “It’s not just for die-hard martial arts fans,” Donohue emphasized. The festival also aims to engage filmmakers with insights from directors and technical experts.

The recently renovated Pollack Tempe Cinemas will host the events, a venue Donohue vetted to ensure it meets modern standards. Attendees will enjoy live martial arts showcases from both local and international practitioners, as well as a star-studded red-carpet event on May 1.

Additionally, the festival aligns with a significant martial arts seminar hosted by the Federation of International Traditional Martial Arts in Phoenix, promising crossover opportunities between the two gatherings.

Sponsored by the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the festival’s proceeds will support breast cancer research, a cause close to Ramos. “My favorite martial arts movies? ‘Ip Man’ really touched me… and ‘Enter the Dragon’ is iconic,” Donohue remarked, underscoring his passion for martial arts and film.
