Maricopa Voters Deliver a Stunning Blow to ‘Soft on Crime’ County Attorney
Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer was reportedly caught off-guard when his tenure faced challenges from Brad Miller, a candidate positioning himself as tough on crime. The political landscape has shifted significantly since May 17, 2023, a date marked by tragedy for Nandia Black and her family.
On that day, Nandia’s parents were involved in a devastating accident caused by a drunken driver on State Route 77. Nandia’s mother, Maria, sustained catastrophic injuries, ultimately succumbing to them four months later. Nandia expressed her anger over the charges brought against the driver, who faced only a misdemeanor, despite his admission of guilt.
In a campaign video, Black criticized what she perceives as a lenient approach to crime under Volkmer’s leadership, declaring a need for a prosecutor who would prioritize public safety. Her endorsement of Miller was strong, advocating for his platform through her social media group focused on justice for DUI victims.
The result of her efforts was clear; Miller won the July 30 primary by a decisive 9-point margin, attracting over 25,000 Republicans disillusioned with current crime management strategies. “Pinal County is finally in safe hands with Brad Miller,” Black stated, encapsulating her campaign’s sentiment.
Miller’s strategy is characterized by urgency, patriotism, and a straightforward message that resonates with voters seeking immediate solutions. His campaign has centered on attracting attention to increasing crime rates in the area, particularly in Maricopa, where violent crime surged 42% in 2023.
In contrast, Volkmer reflects on a career that has been both challenging and rewarding, emphasizing an approach that balances accountability with compassion for defendants facing mental health and substance abuse issues. “We need to look at these people as human beings worthy of love and worthy of mercy,” he stated during a recent interview.
Statistically, Pinal County’s crime rates have fluctuated, with minor dips, but Maricopa has seen significant increases in various crime categories. Arrests have surged for offenses like shoplifting and drug violations, often leading to dissatisfaction among residents regarding lenient sentencing outcomes.
This growing unrest among voters regarding crime perceptions and enforcement strategies has created an environment ripe for Miller’s campaign narrative. His past as a juvenile prosecutor has shaped his views, propelling him to seek harsher penalties for offenders and to amplify victim advocacy.
Miller articulated his desire to enhance support for victims while advocating for stiffer charges against offenders, signaling a clear departure from his predecessor’s policies. “I want to ensure that every victim’s voice is heard,” he stated, emphasizing the need for systemic change within victim services.
As the transition approaches, Volkmer hopes for a smooth handover, acknowledging the importance of effective leadership in the role. “I need a strong county attorney to make good decisions for my community,” he added, highlighting the stakes involved in the upcoming changes.
With Miller’s ascent, Pinal County will likely witness a shift in legal strategy aimed at aggressive crime prevention, setting a new tone for the role of the county attorney.
