Heritage Academy senior Luca Hernandez is making waves in the local soccer scene, setting a record for most goals scored in the Canyon Athletic Association this season. The 17-year-old Maricopan, who has been passionate about soccer since childhood, channeled his love for the game into a remarkable performance on the field.

Growing up in a family steeped in Italian soccer culture, Hernandez was inspired by watching matches with his uncle and grandparents. “I was always watching Italian soccer with my uncle and my grandparents,” he recalled. “They live and breathe soccer.” His family’s encouragement ignited his love for the sport, which began at an early age.

As a child, Hernandez would play soccer with relatives in the backyard, where he quickly showed promise. “My uncle saw that I was using my left foot. I’m a lefty,” he explained. “He said, ‘This kid has potential.’ So, I’ve started soccer from there on out and I’ve loved it ever since.”

Hernandez made an impressive mark during his early years in soccer, netting 29 goals in eighth grade and 38 by the time he reached high school. However, last season, a knee injury sidelined him after scoring just six goals. Undeterred, Hernandez worked hard during his recovery and returned stronger this year, scoring an astounding 49 goals, a new record for the regional league.

Playing as a striker, Hernandez attributes his success to relentless practice. “Before my senior season, I tried to focus on my weak points and strengthen those areas,” he said. “I didn’t score all my goals with my left foot. I’ve always scored with my right and my left, you know. That took a lot of hard work off the field.”

Looking ahead, Hernandez plans to embark on a two-year mission trip with the Latter Day Saints after graduation. Eventually, he hopes to play soccer at Arizona State University while pursuing a degree in physical therapy. His ultimate aim is to balance academics with athletics for as long as possible.

Despite his impressive scoring record, Hernandez emphasizes the importance of perseverance over accolades. “I’ve put a lot of hard work onto the field. I feel like I was a leader and a motivator for the team. Talent without hard work is nothing,” he concluded, hoping his legacy will inspire others.
