Coach Jose Marmolejo and his wife Alicia identified a gap in Maricopa: the lack of a safe and affordable tackle football option for local children. In response, they launched a program designed with community needs in mind.

The result was the Maricopa Devils, a new team affiliated with the national Pop Warner league. This initiative grew out of the city’s existing flag football scene.

“We saw the demand,” Marmolejo stated. “Full-contact football was too expensive for most families. Some leagues charge $400 while still expecting parents to provide their own equipment.”

Contrary to this trend, the Devils provide necessary gear without additional charges. Marmolejo personally invested in helmets and pads, making it easier for families to participate. “The only cost is a registration fee. There are no mandatory fundraisers, and siblings receive discounts,” he explained.

The program accommodates children aged 7-12 for tackle football and ages 6-12 for cheerleading. The season begins on July 15, with practices set to occur four days a week. The Devils operate as a nonprofit, ensuring all coaches are CPR and USA Football-certified and have passed background checks.

“We prioritize safety and support for every child involved,” Marmolejo emphasized. “It’s essential that each player learns to play safe, smart, and strong.”

Development and fundamentals take precedence before kids engage in competitive play. During the season, they will compete against teams from across Arizona, California, and Nevada. High-achieving players may also qualify for Pop Warner’s national scholarships based on their academic performance.

Marmolejo reflects on the impact of youth sports, highlighting that his children, now college graduates, benefited from the discipline gained through their experiences in sports. “I didn’t have these opportunities growing up. Now, my goal is to offer them to others. If I can make just one kid smile, it’s all worth it,” he stated.
