Maricopa County Cracks Down on Food Vendors Amid Diarrhea and Vomiting Outbreak Concerns
MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — In response to health complaints, Maricopa County officials are pursuing action against unpermitted food vendors. Recent reports indicate that at least 17 individuals fell ill after consuming food from these vendors, who operate without proper authorization.
The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department has noted that these vendors often set up in public areas like parking lots or sidewalks. They primarily sell “tacos al pastor,” prepared using a vertical rotisserie, a method of cooking that can lead to foodborne illnesses if not executed under sanitary conditions.
County authorities stress that while most street vendors adhere to safe food handling practices, patrons are encouraged to seek out vendors displaying the appropriate Maricopa County permit plate. Legal measures are now being implemented due to insufficient cooperation from the vendors involved in these health complaints.
Residents who have experienced illness linked to these food stalls can report their issues to Maricopa County at 602-506-6616.
