Marana’s Longtime Mayor Ed Honea Passes Away at 77, Leaving a Legacy of Leadership
Marana, AZ – Mayor Ed Honea passed away on Friday at the age of 77. The news has left the community mourning the loss of a dedicated leader.
Pima County officials praised Honea for his steadfast commitment to Marana, noting he was “a strong leader and steward of his beloved Marana.” His service spanned 37 years across multiple terms, including a recent re-election this year without opposition. Honea’s tenure as mayor began in 1995 and continued until 1997, with a return to the position starting in 2005.
Town Manager Terry Rozema reflected on Honea’s impactful leadership, stating, “Our community has lost a remarkable leader and advocate who served Marana for nearly 40 years.” Rozema emphasized the deep connections Honea made with residents, highlighting his role as a friend and mentor.
Honea’s contributions extended beyond local governance. He cooperated with Pima County on various initiatives, including economic development and transportation projects, while maintaining a respectful dialogue, even amid disagreements. County Supervisor Rex Scott expressed sadness over Honea’s passing, lauding him as “a good friend and a public servant without peer.” Scott recalled their collaborative efforts on the PAG Regional Council and RTA Board, particularly valuing Honea’s experience and wisdom.
Honea’s roots in Marana run deep. His grandfather, Bob Honea, helped establish the town in 1977, while his father, Ray, contributed to the development of Honea Heights in the 1950s. After serving in the Vietnam War as a U.S. Navy Seabee, Honea dedicated nearly 30 years to contracting work for the U.S. Postal Service.
A 1965 Marana High School graduate, Honea was actively involved in community organizations, including the VFW Post 5990 and numerous boards. His leadership roles encompassed the Pima Association of Governments and the Regional Transportation Authority, alongside advocacy for projects like the upcoming Marana Aquatic & Recreation Center.
Honea was also known for his faith, attending both Light the Way Lutheran Church and Community Christian Church of Marana. He is survived by his two children, Whitney and Tiffany, along with three grandchildren who brought him immense joy.
Vice Mayor Jon Post will temporarily assume the role of mayor while an appointment is arranged until a special election in 2026 to fill Honea’s term.
Funeral service details are yet to be announced.
