Luck runs out: Marana ends Salpointe's 7-year streak vs. Southern Az football teams

The Marana Tigers ended the Salpointe Catholic Lancers’ impressive 27-game winning streak against Southern Arizona teams with a 27-24 victory on Friday night. This marked the first matchup for both teams this season.

The game reached halftime locked at 14 points each. The tide turned in the final minutes when Marana quarterback Colten Meyer connected with wide receiver Dominic Cillitto for a crucial 5-yard touchdown pass, followed by Meyer’s successful 2-point conversion.

Salpointe briefly led in the third quarter, but Marana dominated the fourth quarter, showcasing a strong defensive effort that limited the Lancers’ scoring opportunities.

As the game neared its conclusion, Salpointe attempted a desperate Hail Mary pass, only for Marana’s Dezmen Roebuck to intercept the ball, sealing the victory.

Next week, Marana will face Tucson High Magnet School in an away game, while Salpointe prepares to host Shadow Ridge High School on September 13.
