Man Arrested for Spraying Bug Killer on Groceries in Shocking Mesa Walmart Video
MESA, Ariz. — A Mesa man has been arrested after a disturbing incident at a local Walmart, where he was filmed spraying bug killer on various food items, including produce and rotisserie chicken. Charles Smith, 27, faces multiple charges, including criminal damage, endangerment, and theft.
The incident unfolded on December 19, around 8:30 p.m., when Smith entered the store intending to film pranks for social media. Instead of completing the prank as intended, he took a can of “Hot Shot Ultra Bed Bug and Flea Killer” from the shelf and sprayed it on bananas, potatoes, lemons, limes, and rotisserie chickens.
Footage of the act quickly circulated on social media, prompting widespread condemnation. Although the original video was taken down, screenshots and reposts from Smith’s TikTok account revealed his shocking behavior, which included prior incidents of disturbing behavior in public spaces.
Following the incident, Mesa Police notified Walmart management, leading to the swift removal of potentially contaminated products from the store’s shelves. A store spokesperson reassured customers that health and safety measures were being prioritized. “We have removed all directly impacted product and have cleaned and sanitized the affected area of the store,” their statement read.
Local shoppers expressed their dismay. Ramon Soberanes, a frequent customer, described Smith’s actions as “disgusting” and highlighted the risks posed to families. “This is where people shop for their families,” he noted, emphasizing the potential harm to innocent customers.
Tempe police assisted Mesa authorities in locating Smith. He voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement less than 24 hours after the incident was reported. In addition to criminal damage, Smith faces charges of introducing poison, endangerment, and theft. The case is a reminder of the importance of maintaining safety in community spaces.
