Major Shutdowns Hit I-10, I-17 and Phoenix Freeways – What You Need to Know
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced a series of weekend construction projects that will affect several highways in the Phoenix area from September 13 to 16. Significant closures and lane restrictions are anticipated to impact travel, particularly around Sky Harbor Airport and Interstate 17.
This weekend, eastbound Interstate 10 will be closed between the I-17 “Stack” interchange and State Route 51 (“Mini-Stack”) from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday. The closure is necessary for scheduled tunnel maintenance. Drivers heading east can utilize southbound I-17 as a detour to reconnect with I-10 near the airport.
On Saturday night, westbound I-10 will be closed from the I-17 “Split” interchange near Sky Harbor Airport to 7th Avenue from 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. Sunday. Additionally, the southbound SR 51 ramp to westbound I-10 will be closed. A detour for westbound traffic involves taking northbound SR 143 to westbound Loop 202, although I-10 traffic must exit at 7th Street. Motorists in the southeast Valley may opt for westbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) as an alternative route to I-10 near 59th Avenue.
Another closure on westbound I-10 will occur from the State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) to the I-17 “Split” interchange starting Friday at 10 p.m. through Monday at 4 a.m. This closure is part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. On-ramps at Baseline and Broadway roads will be closed, as well as the westbound US 60 on-ramp at Mill Avenue. Detour options include using northbound SR 143 to westbound Loop 202 or eastbound US 60 towards northbound Loop 101 and westbound Loop 202, especially for those heading to the Cardinals game on Sunday.
Concurrently, southbound I-17 will experience closures at Loop 303, leaving one lane open between Loop 303 and Jomax Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Some on-ramps, including those at SR 74/Carefree Highway and Dove Valley Road, will be intermittently closed. Drivers are encouraged to avoid local roads east of I-17, using the designated off- and on-ramps at Loop 303 as their primary detour.
