Major Intersection Makeover Set to Begin Next Week
The City of Maricopa has announced the initiation of a significant project aimed at enhancing the intersection of John Wayne Parkway and Smith-Enke Road. Scheduled to commence on August 26, this improvement initiative is expected to span approximately six months.
The project will introduce a second left-turn lane for westbound traffic on Smith-Enke Road, along with a free-flowing right-turn lane onto John Wayne Parkway. Additionally, upgrades will be made to the entrance of the CVS parking lot to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
Most construction activities will take place east of the John Wayne Parkway along Smith-Enke Road, while the west side of the intersection will see an extension of the median to increase capacity for left-turn-only lanes.
As outlined in the city’s statement, the first phase will concentrate on relocating electrical components adjacent to the roadway. This initial phase is designed to avoid any lane closures during the work, ensuring minimal disruption for motorists.
City officials have emphasized that the primary goal of this project is to enhance the intersection’s capacity to accommodate increasing traffic volumes. Residents can expect that most construction work will occur on weekdays, although there may be instances of overnight or weekend operations.
Despite the construction, access to nearby businesses and neighborhoods will remain available throughout the project, according to city officials.
