Major I-10 West Closure: What to Expect This Weekend, Aug. 16-19
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is informing drivers in the Phoenix area about significant closures on westbound Interstate 10 this weekend, August 16-19. These closures are part of the ongoing Broadway Curve Improvement Project. Motorists are advised to plan for extra travel time and explore alternative routes.
Westbound I-10 will be closed between Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) and the I-17 “Split” interchange from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday. All westbound on-ramps between Loop 202 and the I-17 Split will be shut down, with additional closures starting at 8 p.m. Friday at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard and several other locations. Travelers should expect delays.
To navigate around the closure, drivers can take eastbound Loop 202 to northbound Loop 101, then westbound Loop 202 in Tempe to access Sky Harbor Airport or downtown Phoenix. An alternative detour includes using Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) to connect back with I-10 in west Phoenix. For those coming from the Tucson or Casa Grande areas, using westbound I-8 to northbound SR 85 is advised to reach I-10 in Buckeye.
Southbound I-17 will also see closures at Jomax Road in north Phoenix from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, with lane restrictions in place. Traffic will utilize off- and on-ramps at Jomax Road as the primary detour. For minimal disruptions, traveling early in the morning or later at night is recommended. Notably, no scheduled I-17 closures are expected over the weekends of August 23-26 and August 30-September 3.
Additionally, eastbound Loop 202 will close between Arizona Avenue and Gilbert Road for a freeway widening project during the same timeframe. Eastbound on-ramps at Dobson and Alma School roads will also be closed. Alternate routes through eastbound Pecos or Germann Road are suggested.
Meanwhile, westbound US 60 (Superstition Freeway) will be reduced to three lanes between Gilbert and Dobson roads for pavement maintenance. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and may use Baseline Road or Southern Avenue as alternatives while on-ramps are inaccessible.
Schedules may change due to weather or other conditions. For the latest updates, visit the ADOT website or consult the Weekend Travel Advisory map graphic.
