Major Arizona Builder Faces Backlash for Allegedly Silencing Home Inspector

By Staff Reporter |
Taylor Morrison, a Scottsdale-based national homebuilder, faces accusations of attempting to suppress criticism from a home inspector whose viral videos reveal what he terms dangerous workmanship. The inspector, Cyril (Cy) Porter, has amassed nearly 1.2 million followers across various social media platforms for his content highlighting significant issues in newly built homes.
Porter runs CyFy Home Inspections independently, often noting that many homes he critiques had received approval from local inspectors. In April, a Taylor Morrison representative named Jennifer lodged a complaint with the State Board of Technical Registration (SBTR) against Porter, seeking both disciplinary action and a mandate for the removal of his previous posts.
At a recent hearing, the SBTR opted not to impose disciplinary measures on Porter but issued a nondisciplinary letter of concern regarding the allegations. Taylor Morrison’s claims include three specific violations: fraud, use of derogatory sexual terms for female professionals, and endorsing products for profit.
The company asserts that Porter should refrain from making any future posts related to them, including visual representations, logos, or affiliations that could identify the builder. They argue that his conduct is not aligned with home inspection standards, branding it as misleading advertising.
Despite the controversy, Porter’s escalating popularity has him booked for inspections well into 2026. When asked if he recommends any builders, Porter bluntly stated, “all [builders are] the same,” underscoring his belief that dangerous workmanship is widespread.
In a statement provided to 12 News earlier this summer, Taylor Morrison described Porter’s social media presence as “sensationalist” and unprofessional. The company acknowledged that while they have no issues with his inspections, they believe his methods violate professional conduct regulations set by the Board of Technical Registration.
Porter’s investigations have revealed severe issues — from improperly installed A/C units to alarming construction oversights, many of which can jeopardize health and safety. He has noted attempts by builders to restrict his access to crucial inspection areas such as roofs and attics.
In addition to Taylor Morrison, Porter has documented substandard practices by several other builders, including D.R. Horton, Lennar, and Shea Homes, among others. His work continues to raise awareness about the quality of construction in a market where consumers expect high standards.
