Opening statements start this week in Lori Vallow Daybell's murder conspiracy case. Here's what to expect.

PHOENIX — Lori Vallow Daybell, dubbed the “Doomsday mom,” is set to face trial in Arizona for conspiracy to commit murder following her conviction in Idaho for the deaths of her children. A jury has been selected, and opening statements are anticipated on Monday, with Vallow Daybell representing herself in court.

The case began to unfold in 2019, initially marked by the death of her former husband, Charles Vallow, shot by her brother, Alex Cox. Evidence suggests that Cox conspired with Vallow Daybell to facilitate this killing, despite initial claims of self-defense.

Following her husband’s death, Vallow Daybell relocated with her children, Tylee and JJ, to Rexburg, Idaho. Investigators believe the children were killed shortly thereafter. In a troubling twist, Vallow Daybell married Chad Daybell in November 2019, shortly after the suspicious death of his first wife, Tammy.

In 2020, the remains of Tylee and JJ were discovered buried in Chad Daybell’s backyard, leading to murder charges against both him and Vallow Daybell. They were accused of removing individuals obstructing their relationship, resulting in them being convicted of multiple charges in Idaho.

Currently, Vallow Daybell faces two conspiracy charges in Arizona. The first involves plotting against Charles Vallow, while the second pertains to an alleged attempt on the life of her niece’s ex-husband in Gilbert, a plot that ultimately failed. Her brother, Alex, cannot be tried posthumously, having died in December 2019.

Vallow Daybell’s request to represent herself was granted, despite concerns raised by previous attorneys about her mental competency. Additionally, she is permitted to wear civilian clothing during the trial, a departure from typical jail attire. However, a stun belt will be worn to ensure courtroom security.

The jury for her trial consists of thirteen men and three women. Opening statements are set for 10:30 AM local time on Monday, marking a significant moment in this high-profile case with deep implications.
