Snakes and Ladders: Local woman finds purpose in combination exotic pet, game store

Exotic Pet Kingdom, a vibrant new business in South Lake Havasu City, has become a hub for exotic pet enthusiasts amid ongoing renovations. The store, located at 3550 Challenger Drive alongside Valhalla Gaming, is packed with an impressive collection of tabletop games, including Settlers of Catan, and welcomes visitors with an inquisitive parrot.

Kayla Smith, 22, who works at the establishment, describes her role as a dream come true. “I was 18 when I was hired to work here,” Smith shared. With aspirations of becoming a zookeeper, she finds her current position a perfect fit. The business, founded in December 2020 by her aunt and uncle, has carved out a niche for itself in Havasu with a diverse array of exotic pet supplies.

Initially focused on exotic saltwater fish, Exotic Pet Kingdom has significantly expanded its offerings over the years. Smith emphasizes the store’s commitment to providing one-on-one care for animals, distinguishing it from other local pet stores. She notes, “We’ve gotten amazing exposure from the community, and we’ve watched the community grow alongside us.”

The store aims to be a reliable source for potential pet owners seeking healthy, high-quality animals. Smith’s family helps run the business, reinforcing its community feel. “I have a three-year-old who is growing up as part of a pet and toy store,” she explained. Many customers also bring their children, creating connections between different generations of Havasu residents and exotic animals.

Exotic Pet Kingdom offers a range of animals, including lizards, snakes, and even mammals like rabbits and ferrets. Additionally, they stock specialized food to meet the dietary needs of these unique pets. The store has even organized field trips for local elementary schools, allowing children to engage with the exotic pets first-hand.

Smith herself is not only about work; she has around 70 exotic pets at home, further nurturing her passion for these creatures. “With the amount of time I spend around them, it’s definitely more of a passion,” she stated, highlighting the fascination people have for exotic animals.

Valhalla Gaming, which shares the same space, emerged from an idea by Nolan Bauer, Smith’s uncle. As the toy store’s products expanded to include popular trading cards and role-playing games, it sought to provide families with engaging options beyond just pets. “Nolan wanted to offer something for kids to take home,” Smith mentioned.

Both Exotic Pet Kingdom and Valhalla Gaming maintain an active presence on social media, being accessible on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
