Local volunteer group addresses literacy

During a January book drive, the Phoenix Chapter of National Charity League donated more than 4,000 books to Valley nonprofits (submitted photo).

On January 11, the Phoenix Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) engaged in its annual National Day of Service book drive, emphasizing the importance of literacy in local communities.

Statistics from the National Literacy Trust reveal that nearly 20% of children aged five to eight lack a personal book at home. NCL aims to close this gap and foster a lifelong passion for reading.

This year, the chapter successfully donated over 4,200 books, along with 200 handmade bookmarks featuring encouraging messages. Beneficiaries included Phoenix Children’s Hospital, OCJKids, St. Vincent de Paul, local schools, and victims of the California wildfires. In yet another collaborative effort with chapters nationwide, NCL is ambitiously working toward a goal of one million book donations across the country in celebration of its 100th anniversary.

The Phoenix Chapter is currently conducting its annual membership drive, which will remain open until March 1. Mothers and daughters interested in contributing positively to the community are encouraged to join. More information can be found at www.nationalcharityleague.org/chapter/phoenix.
