Local Firefighters Team Up with ‘Tommy Moose’ to Bring Comfort to Kids in Crisis
At a luncheon held on January 16, 2025, at the Maricopa Moose lodge, members of the Thunderbird Fire District and Maricopa Fire/Medical Department gathered to hear from Moose International Board of Directors Chairman Robert Funkey about a meaningful initiative. The event marked the donation of several boxes of stuffed animals, known as “Tommy Moose,” to local fire departments.
In times of crisis such as car accidents or house fires, firefighters will now deliver comfort alongside emergency aid. The Mooose International organization aims to support children facing traumatic experiences through these plush toys. “Our lodge is just a little over a year old, so this is our first time donating to the fire department,” said Marc Tilford, President of the Maricopa Moose. He emphasized their commitment to maintaining an ample supply of these items for first responders.
Funkey’s visit to Maricopa was part of a broader national tour to connect with various Moose lodges. “This is one of the smaller lodges, but they’re so excited and encouraged here,” he noted. Funkey highlighted the organization’s efforts to enhance community involvement, which he believes is key to attracting new members.
With a rich history in leadership roles since 1998, Funkey previously served as vice chairman and chaplain within the organization. He reiterated the Moose Lodge’s mission: to uplift the lives of children and seniors in communities across the United States.
