Live updates: Severe thunderstorm warnings for portions of Maricopa, Gila and Pinal counties could bring strong winds


Monsoon moisture is moving across Arizona Sunday. Here are the latest updates.

PHOENIX — Thunderstorms are sweeping across Arizona, ranging from the northern regions to the southern border with New Mexico.

Maricopa County is currently under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m.

The storm system is advancing south, heading into the Valley.

Some arriving flights at Sky Harbor Airport are experiencing delays due to the turbulent weather conditions.

An alert indicates that flight arrivals are delayed by an average of 56 minutes.

The National Weather Service (NWS) notes that strong, damaging winds are the primary threat as the storms approach the Valley.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in place for parts of Gila and Maricopa counties until 3:15 p.m.

At 2:34 p.m., severe storms stretched from Horseshoe Reservoir through Punkin Center to near the Tonto Basin, affecting several roadways such as AZ Route 87 and AZ Route 188.

According to the NWS, residents should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of any building for protection.

Severe thunderstorm warnings have also been issued for Gila, Maricopa, and Pinal counties until 2:45 p.m., including areas like Fountain Hills and Cave Creek.

A severe thunderstorm near Superior is moving south at 5 mph, accompanied by 60 mph winds and penny-sized hail. It affects US Highway 60 and AZ Route 177.

Storms are expected to descend from Northern Arizona into the lower deserts between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. The primary concern is strong to severe winds with gusts potentially above 58 mph. There is also a 70 to 80 percent chance of experiencing winds stronger than 35 mph.

Additionally, dense blowing dust and heavy rainfall are likely.

Roosevelt is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 2:15 p.m. A thunderstorm located 12 miles east of Tonto National Monument is moving south at 20 mph, with 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail affecting AZ Route 188.
