'It was go time': Lifeguard jumps into action to save 4-year-old from drowning at Cortez Pool

A near-tragedy at a Phoenix pool turned into a heartwarming story of heroism as lifeguards saved a 4-year-old girl’s life.

The incident occurred on Memorial Day at Cortez Pool when lifeguards noticed the child unconscious in the water. Quick-thinking staff immediately began rescue breaths and CPR.

Desmi Cordell, one of the lifeguards on duty, described the urgency they felt. “When whistles went off, we automatically knew we needed to go into our action plan,” Cordell commented.

Chief Mike Duran of the Phoenix Fire Department praised the lifeguards’ actions. “They relied upon their training and performed flawlessly,” he said, noting that scenarios like these are things firefighters prepare for during every call.

The lifeguards’ efforts were recognized in a special ceremony, celebrating their incredible work and the lives they save. Desmi expressed her pride, stating, “It feels really good. We just did our job, but it’s an amazing feeling knowing that we can save lives.”

Duran stressed the importance of their actions, saying, “They gave this family a second chance. These folks are heroes for the actions they performed.”

The profound impact of their heroism resonates deeply with the community and the families involved.
