Library names new services director

Erin MacFarlane

In mid-July, Phoenix City Manager Jeff Barton announced the appointment of Erin MacFarlane as the new Library Services Director, effective July 29. MacFarlane succeeds Rita Hamilton, who retired in April after a 13-year tenure as the city librarian.

MacFarlane brings a wealth of experience, having dedicated 26 years to education and library services. She began her career at the Phoenix Public Library in 2006 and has spent the past 14 years with the Maricopa County Library District, most recently as deputy director.

While at Maricopa County, MacFarlane made significant strides in library accessibility. She implemented virtual programs, introduced digital library card registration, and established curbside pickup services. Additionally, she developed crucial community partnerships, including a noteworthy program with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to enhance library resources within county jails.

MacFarlane is also active in policy development, working with the American Library Association and the Arizona Library Association. She focuses on initiatives that support intellectual freedom and the accessibility of electronic resources, promoting an open and informed society.
