Anna Van Hoek
Leftist Parent Sends Disturbing Package to School Board Member as Ultimatum
By Staff Reporter |
Anna Van Hoek, vice president of the Higley Unified School Board, has come under scrutiny after receiving a disturbing package from a Queen Creek resident. The package, delivered by Amazon, contained a rope and a copy of the book “Homegoing,” noted for its sexually explicit content.
Following Van Hoek’s report to authorities, the Gilbert Police obtained a warrant to trace the package back to Lindzie Head, a local mother and medical technologist at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. Head’s involvement extends beyond her profession; she also serves on the Queen Creek Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and has held positions within the PTO for local schools.
This package arrived amid ongoing controversy surrounding a local high school teacher, Brittany O’Neill, who faced an investigation for assigning “Homegoing” to students. The book, a historical fiction novel addressing slavery, contains graphic depictions of sexual violence, drug use, and abuse, raising concerns among some parents regarding its suitability for minors.
Under state law, sexually explicit materials can only be provided if expressly deemed educational and with parental consent. Following the assignment of the book, Van Hoek aligned with parents opposing its use in classrooms, advocating for the removal of such content.
In statements following the incident, Van Hoek revealed that Head and her husband, Kyle, stated to police that they have engaged legal counsel. Van Hoek expressed a firm stance against threats and harassment, recalling an earlier incident where her tire was slashed during a board meeting last October. “I will not tolerate this kind of harassment and threats directed not only at myself but also at our district parents,” she declared.
Moreover, Van Hoek reported that another parent in the district received a similar anonymous package from Head containing “Homegoing,” which included a note urging the recipient to “read the book and maybe you’ll learn something.” This parent also faced harassment online, experiencing doxxing, where personal information was shared publicly without consent.
As investigations continue, Van Hoek indicated that no further details can be disclosed due to the ongoing nature of the inquiry. Interestingly, these incidents appear to mark a significant shift in Head’s approach to civic engagement. Last May, she completed the Citizen Leadership Institute in Queen Creek and subsequently took on her current role in local governance.
Head has also utilized her platform to advocate for bipartisan cooperation in Congress, urging effective budget passage in an opinion piece last October. Her social media presence lends insight into her approach, as her Instagram bio humorously states, “You can sit with me. Here to be unreasonable. Uninformed and relying on hearsay.”
