Lawrence and ‘Mama’ Set to Kick Off Sedona Film Festival

Emmy Award-winning actress Vicki Lawrence will take center stage at the Sedona Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 22, at 8 p.m., unveiling her unique performance “Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show” to kick off the 31st annual Sedona International Film Festival.
Lawrence’s journey began unexpectedly when she was plucked from obscurity as a high school senior. She became a prominent figure on the iconic “Carol Burnett Show,” where she famously introduced the character Thelma Harper, affectionately known as “Mama.” This significant role emerged during the show’s seventh season, as Lawrence, then just 24, formed a beloved connection with audiences.
The actress continued to captivate viewers in her own spinoff, “Mama’s Family,” which aired from 1983 to 1989. The series, marking the misadventures of the Harper family, left an indelible mark on television. “Everybody has a ‘Mama’ in their family,” Lawrence noted, emphasizing the relatable nature of her character. “What I hear from fans is often, ‘Oh, my God, you’re my aunt or you’re my grandma.’”
This upcoming show blends stand-up comedy with stories from Lawrence’s career, culminating in a lively second half featuring Mama. “Even as my story ages, it becomes increasingly fascinating to younger audiences,” she remarked, reflecting on how the evolution of the entertainment industry has changed pathways to fame.
Lawrence’s character Mama shares humorous takes on contemporary issues, lending a comedic voice to societal quirks. Comments regarding low-flow toilets and multitasking while driving resonate with the audience. “The world keeps getting crazier, so there’s a wealth of material,” she stated, also poking fun at political disagreements. “Why can’t they figure anything out? We’re just arguing all the time.”
While considering whether Mama might seek the presidency again, as she did in Lawrence’s book “Mama for President: Good Lord, Why Not?” the actress remarked, “God knows our candidates are allowed to be old now.” She also acknowledged that as she matures, her perspectives increasingly align with Mama’s. “At some point, you earn the right to say what you’re thinking.”
Before Lawrence’s performance, costume and fashion designer Bob Mackie will present his documentary, “Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion,” at 4 p.m. This film chronicles Mackie’s illustrious six-decade career, featuring interviews with notable clients such as Cher and RuPaul, as well as insights into his creative process. Mackie will engage the audience during a Q&A before introducing Lawrence.
He profoundly influenced Lawrence’s career. “There were times we struggled with a character, and Bob would dress you up,” she recounted. “You’d look in the mirror and think, ‘My God, I know who I am as a character.’”
SIFF Executive Director Patrick Schweiss expressed excitement for the event, calling Lawrence’s talent “legendary” and anticipating a night filled with “side-splitting laughter.”
Tickets for “Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show” are priced at $59 for general admission and $49 for SIFF members, with VIP options available for $200, including a meet-and-greet with Lawrence.
