Election results: Lake wins US Senate primary, several races too close to call

PHOENIX — Arizona voters took to the polls Tuesday for the primary election.

Kari Lake won the US Senate primary over Mark Lamb in a close race. Other significant races remain too close to call as of Tuesday night.

Arizona is expected to play a critical role in the upcoming White House race, reminiscent of 2020. However, the Tuesday state primaries will set the stage for competitive contests that could influence control of the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and both chambers of the state legislature.

Maricopa County had a 22.93% voter turnout, with over 554,000 of the 2.4 million registered voters casting ballots.

Here are results from some of the most-watched races:

Kari Lake emerged victorious in the Republican primary for the US Senate race.

Accepting the nomination just after 9 p.m., Lake thanked her campaign volunteers, donors, and family. She also extended gratitude to former President Donald Trump for his endorsement, stating, “He can’t do it alone, it’s not about one man, he can’t do this alone. He needs backup in Washington DC. And I’m going to be his backup.”

Lake also expressed appreciation for her opponent, Mark Lamb, calling him a friend.

“Every day he goes out there and puts it all on the line, we appreciate you, Mark,” Lake said. “I know we both want to save America and I look forward to working with you.”

Lamb mentioned he was still waiting for results from other districts before conceding the race.

Lake is set to face Ruben Gallego in November, who ran unopposed for his party’s nomination.

Justin Heap currently leads the Republican primary for Maricopa County recorder by about 6,600 votes. With several key positions being contested, Tuesday’s unofficial results show Heap ahead of Stephen Richer and Don Hiatt. Richer, the incumbent, has been criticized within his own party for rejecting claims of election fraud in Arizona.

In the Maricopa County Attorney race, incumbent Rachel Mitchell is leading with 59.1% of the vote over Gina Godbehere’s 40.9%.

Jerry Sheridan maintains a comfortable lead in the Republican primary for Maricopa County sheriff. Unofficial results show Sheridan with 138,031 votes, compared to Frank Milstead’s 78,383 votes and Mike Crawford’s 56,724 votes.

Tyler Andrew Kamp is ahead of Russ Skinner, the current Maricopa County Sheriff, with Kamp receiving 113,840 votes to Skinner’s 96,178 votes.

In Arizona’s 1st Congressional District Democratic primary, Amish Shah is leading by about 1,500 votes. Unofficial results show a closely contested race among several candidates.

Yassamin Ansari is leading the Democratic primary to fill Ruben Gallego’s congressional seat with 15,173 votes, while Raquel Terán and Duane Wooten follow with 13,780 and 3,679 votes, respectively.

Abraham Hamadeh leads the crowded Republican primary for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District with 21,853 votes. Hamadeh faces strong competition from Blake Masters, Ben Toma, Trent Franks, and Anthony Kern.

Maricopa County plays a significant role in Arizona’s political landscape. It is the United States’ fourth-largest county by population, with over 4.4 million residents according to the 2020 Census. The county, encompassing 9,224 square miles, includes the majority of Arizona’s population and features one of the largest park systems in the nation.

Phoenix, the county seat and state capital, is the fifth most populous city in the United States. The county derives its name from the Maricopa Native American Tribe.
