Lake Havasu High School upperclassmen dig into hands-on medical program

Lake Havasu High School juniors and seniors recently gained firsthand experience in the healthcare industry through a unique program.

From July 15 to July 26, the students participated in the Multiple Avenues for Successful Healthcare (MASH) program at Havasu Regional Medical Center (HRMC). Patti Kinley, director of inpatient nursing, highlighted the program’s goal of providing students with opportunities typically unavailable to their peers.

Throughout the two-week program, participants were introduced to various healthcare fields and skills, including EMS, nursing, and surgery. They even witnessed a cesarean section and an orthopedic joint replacement surgery.

Kinley emphasized the program’s role in fostering growth and engagement in healthcare. “The program helps demonstrate to the students that realizing their dreams is possible if they work hard,” stated Kinley.

Students also acted as patients on board a Native Air helicopter and experienced what it’s like to be in an ambulance, thanks to American Medical Response (AMR).

The educational aspect of the program included courses from the American Heart Association on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Stop the Bleed initiatives.

Kinley congratulated all the students who completed the HRMC’s MASH program, expressing that they had “terrific experiences.”
