Kamala Harris Targets Latino Voters with Phoenix Campaign Events This Week
Civil rights leader Dolores Huerta will lead rallies on Thursday alongside Harris’ campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, a granddaughter of Cesar Chavez.
PHOENIX — Vice President Kamala Harris is bringing her presidential campaign to Phoenix with a focus on Hispanic voters. This marks the first major stop for her three-day-old campaign.
The rallies will see participation from Latino labor leaders and elected officials. Chavez Rodriguez, the granddaughter of labor leader Cesar Chavez, will co-lead these events.
The events aim to highlight the critical choice Arizonans face. According to the Harris campaign, voters will decide between Harris’ optimistic vision and Trump’s Project 2025 agenda, which they argue will hurt Latino families in Arizona.
Project 2025 is a cornerstone of Trump’s campaign for a potential second term. The plan proposes drastic cuts in social welfare programs and mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
The Harris campaign expects strong local engagement. They have established 12 field offices in Arizona, starting with one in Maryvale, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood.
In contrast, the Trump campaign has just rejuvenated its Latino outreach efforts. Its 2024 “Latino-Americans for Trump” initiative started only last month after closing its 2020 office in south Phoenix.
Harris has made Arizona a focal point, visiting three times in the past four months. Her June visit was particularly centered around abortion rights.
Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff played a significant role, leading campaign events in Phoenix prior to President Biden’s decision to step aside.
Polling data shows Arizona remains a battleground state. Biden’s narrow victory in 2020, by just 11,000 votes, emphasizes the volatile nature of voter sentiment here.
Interestingly, Latinos have become a larger share of Arizona’s electorate over the last decade. Nationwide, Trump has been closing the polling gap among Latino voters.
Decision 2024
